The 3,000-mile myth
The old rule of changing oil every 3,000 miles comes from a time of less refined oils and engines. Most modern vehicles running full synthetic oil can go 5,000 to 10,000 miles between changes.
Your owner's manual — or your car's oil-life monitor — is the best starting point.
Severe driving conditions
Manufacturers list a shorter 'severe service' schedule, and many DFW drivers qualify without realizing it:
- Frequent short trips under 10 miles
- Stop-and-go rush-hour traffic
- Extreme heat above 90°F
- Towing or carrying heavy loads
- Dusty or construction-heavy roads
Synthetic vs. conventional
Synthetic oil resists breaking down under high heat, which matters in Texas summers. Many newer engines require it. Synthetic blends are a middle ground for older vehicles.
Always use the viscosity (like 0W-20 or 5W-30) your manufacturer specifies.
Signs your oil needs changing
Dark, gritty oil on the dipstick, a low oil level, a ticking engine noise, or an oil change reminder light all mean it's time.
