Tire Pressure Light On? What the TPMS Light Means

4 min readBy the mechanics at Aaron's Auto Repair

The short answer

A solid TPMS light means at least one tire is 25% or more below recommended pressure; check and fill all four tires to the pressure on your door-jamb sticker. A light that flashes for about a minute and then stays on means a TPMS sensor or system fault.

Solid light

Low pressure. Use a gauge on all four tires, filling to the door-jamb pressure — not the max pressure printed on the tire.

Flashing then solid

A sensor battery has died or a sensor is missing or damaged. Sensors last 5–10 years.

Why it comes on in cold weather

Tire pressure drops about 1 PSI for every 10°F temperature drop. A blue norther blowing through DFW can trigger lights overnight.

Is it safe to drive?

Drive gently to the nearest air pump. If a tire looks visibly low or is losing air quickly, change to the spare.
